Cleaning Up Your Act

Sometimes life gets busy and the house cleaning gets away from us.  Then suddenly we realize that friends or family are coming over to visit. So the whole family pitches in to clean the house top to bottom (or at least the rooms that will be seen).  When this happens, my wife and I often say to each other, “It is good to have company.” Not only do we have the fond memories of spending time with loved ones but we also enjoy having a clean house afterwards.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread was the first spring cleaning. The Israelites had to clean the yeast (picture of sin) out of their house.  Paul tells us that if sin goes unchecked, the dirt will spread into every room in our spiritual house.  The Feast of Unleavened Bread is a visual lesson instructing us how God wants us to change through Christ. When one accepts Jesus as the Passover Lamb who dies for our sins, his position before God changes to sinless (without yeast) because Jesus took on our sins. We are righteous through Jesus.

As believers in Christ, we are to put off the sinful nature within us. Ephesians 4:22-24 says, "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

"So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature ... The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God ... Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other."  (Gal. 5:16-24).

You may look at this list above of things that need to be cleaned out of your life and think that you will never be able to do it.  You're right, but Jesus can do it - just ask him!  (He even does the rooms that no one will see.)
