So, Sow!

In 1792, at the age of 18, John Chapman headed west.  He had no money but he had some experience working as an apprentice for an orchardist.  Since he was poor, he would go and dig through the pomace waste of cider mills to get seeds because he knew that there was value in these seed!  He knew that if he planted them, they were the source of life for new apple trees.  As he traveled west, he he introduced apple trees to large portions of Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Chapman planted more then just apple seeds, you see, he was a Christian cleverly disguised as a orchardist.  As he traveled west helping people with their orchards, he was also functioning as a missionary.  Wherever he went, Chapman would read his Bible aloud and sometime preach to anyone who would listen!  He lived out his life as an itinerant planter - he carried with him two types of seeds, apple seeds and God’s word.

Chapman understood that “whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”(2 Cor 9:6)   He served a God “who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food [and He] will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” (2 Cor 9:10)

What are you doing as you walk through life?  Are you living in a way the acknowledges Mark 4: “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how.”  Your job is to sow the seed of God’s Word - He will make it grow!

I’m sure that none of Chapman’s apple trees are still around.  However, I’m sure that many of the trees in those states can trace their seed stock back to his trees.  By the way, you may know Chapman better as the American Legend, Johnny Appleseed.  I wonder if they gave him the nickname ‘Johnny Bibleseed’ in heaven?

Plant the seed of God’s word, it has eternal implications!

Isaiah 55:10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
