Devotional Thoughts:

Dig Deeper

Jesus is coming to Jerusalem.  The people have rolled out the ‘red carpet’ of coats and branches.  The crowds are shouting “Hosanna .a.a. blessed is the King of Israel” (John 12 & Matt. 21)  The Pharisees want Jesus to tell the people to be quiet and Jesus says “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” (Luke 19:39-40)

Can inanimate objects like stones sing?  The Psalmist says “let the sea resound . . . let  the fields be jubilant . . . all the tree of the forest will sing . . . before the Lord.”  Isaiah also knew that objects like “mountains and hills will burst into song before [Jesus].

Stones not only sing, they also have eyes and ears. “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God." (Joshua 24:27)

We would be wise to be careful about how we act in front of stones.  Our actions could cause them to bare witness to our failings and our lack of action could cause them to break into song.  My suggestion is to live carefully and praise the Lord, then you will keep those stones quiet!
